Arun Chaudhary: First Cameraman

So I’ve been talking about these new ties I got — here they are.

I needed some with cleaner, more simple patterns, otherwise they can appear to shift around on TV in an optical effect known as the Moire pattern. Check it out on Wikipedia, super interesting.

I’ve always preferred a complicated tie and since I was usually the one behind the camera, I haven’t had to do this particular exercise until now. Not so with the President. I recount in First Cameraman, how one of the first things I did was film all of the President’s ties to see how they behave on TV. It wasn’t something we released — it wasn’t until much later that someone told me this practice had become a favorite part of the NBC Drama, The West Wing. But once I knew that, we threw a shot into an episode of West Wing Week during the very next State of the Union, a favored occasion for tie testing.

It’s around 2:10.

Release day tomorrow! Going to wear the one in the middle…
